A management review (old name: management review) is intended to assess the effectiveness and suitability of the management system and to improve it where necessary. Within standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 27001, the review is an essential moment for the management to check whether the system is still in line with the strategic direction of the organization. The aim is to ensure that quality and information security objectives are achieved and that the policy is permanently adequate. The review evaluates the performance, risks, opportunities and results of internal audits and corrective actions. In this way, the review provides a structural basis for continuous improvement of processes and compliance with laws and regulations. It also supports decision-making about resources, competencies and strategic priorities. Ultimately, the management review strengthens the confidence that the management system effectively contributes to customer satisfaction and risk management.

Example of a management review content:

  • Evaluation of previous actions
Status of follow-up actions to previous management reviews.

  • Performance and effectiveness of the management system (KMS, ISMS, VMS, ..)
Analysis of the performance of processes and objectives.

  • Customer satisfaction and stakeholder feedback
Assessment of customer satisfaction data and relevant complaints

  • (Quality) objectives
Degree of achievement of quality objectives

  • Performance indicators and process results
Results of internal audits and other performance measurements

  • Non-conformities and corrective actions
Overview of identified non-conformities and the progress of corrective actions

  • Monitoring and measurement results
Results of monitoring and measurement of processes and products

  • Risks and opportunities
Assessment of new risks and opportunities and the effectiveness of previous control measures

  • Need for changes to the QMS
Evaluation of the need to adapt policies, objectives or processes

  • Assessment of resources
Appropriateness of the available resources (people, infrastructure, etc.)

  • External and internal issues
Analysis of changes in the context of the organisation that may affect the QMS

  • Improvement possibilities
Recommendations for improvements in the quality management system.

Mandatory Inputs for the management review:

  • Results of audits.
  • Customer feedback.
  • Performance and compliance of processes and products.
  • Status of preventive and corrective actions.
  • Changes that may affect the QMS.
  • Recommendations for improvements.
  • Evaluation of supplier performance (if applicable).

Other Requirements:

  • Frequency: reviews should occur regularly (e.g. annually).
  • Documentation: results and decisions must be documented.
  • Actions: concrete decisions and actions must be defined and followed up.

This structured approach ensures that management is adequately informed and the management system is continuously improved.

Example management review (digital method)

A digital method for conducting a management review transforms a traditional, time-consuming process into an efficient and strategic steering tool. Through central planning and automatic agenda generation, all mandatory topics and inputs, such as audits, KPIs and customer feedback, are consistently secured. Digital data collection ensures that all relevant information is available in real-time in advance, so that participants are better prepared and participate more strongly in terms of content.

During the review, a digital platform facilitates a structured discussion of performance, risks and opportunities, fully in line with, for example, ISO 9001 or ISO 27001 requirements. The effectiveness of the quality management system is immediately made clear via dashboards and linked performance indicators. In addition, digital support makes it easy to quickly analyze and document changes in the organizational context and their impact.

Action points, improvement measures and strategic decisions are immediately recorded and assigned, including responsibilities and deadlines. Automatic reporting ensures a professional and complete management review report without additional administrative burden.

Thanks to central storage and version management, all decisions, analyses and progress are easily traceable and audit-proof.
In addition, digital follow-up makes it possible to continuously monitor the status of actions and make timely adjustments where necessary.
This not only strengthens stakeholder engagement, but also increases transparency within the organization.

Ultimately, a digital management review ensures faster decision-making, better compliance and a powerful incentive for continuous improvement and strategic growth.
