ISO 9001 handbook ... Past tense such a quality manual?

The ISO 9001 handboek for example, in the cupboard of every department manager, known in the workplace as the 'ISO book'. In fact, it was a quality manual, safety manual, environmental manual, etc.   or a combination of these. Keeping the 'handbook' up to date was a challenge. The new versions were in the bin. Sign off that you had received (and read?) them. Then replace all procedures, instructions one by one.
Maybe you remembered it...

And then there was ISO 9001:2015 2026 (click here for more info)

Since ISO 9001:2015 it is: 'documented information' It is no longer the 'preparation of a manual', the (6) mandatory documents ... and so on.

Many advisors have given their new insights and examples about this:

  • ISO 9001:2015: Not a handbook, but documented information
  • Switching to the renewed norm ISO9001:2015
  • A simple Quality Manual and no Bureaucracy
  • ISO 9001:2015 means saying goodbye to quality manual
  • The quality manual, mandatory procedures and registrations
  • The impact of deregulation of the quality system on ISO 9001:2015

They are of course focused on the content and (often) ignore the tooling.

Beyond ISO 9001:2015 2026

On the IT side, developments have perhaps gone even faster: social quality systems, straight from the cloud. Quite different from the collection of process descriptions, procedures, instructions and forms. Printed and bundled in the bookin the cupboard of every department manager.... A digital (quality) management system can do so much more, apart from the various 'ISO standards'. (Just for fun, put this Proware system online in 60 seconds as a test.... and let me know if sample documentation is useful.)

An overview of 'standard' functionalities of a digital management system:

Navigation / Search
  • Index of all documents
  • Overview by function, process, standard item
  • My documents, which I have something to do with
  • Last consulted by me
  • Trending documents within the organization
  • Recently searched within the organization
  • 'Full text search'
Workflow control
Monitoring
  • Consultations by document, by type, by period
  • Not found, but searched for
  • Never used documents
  • Reports, to be defined yourself
Chain integration / mobile
  • For customers, who have to 'watch'
  • For subcontractors who are required to read instructions (mandatory)
  • Using corporate documents together
  • At the project location, on your phone
  • At the client's bedside, on your tablet
