What is a risk carousel

The risk process starts with setting goals and identifying risks (threats and uncertainties). This in turn involves classifying risks and determining measures to reduce the risks if necessary. However, the experience and the importance attached to it can vary greatly from person to person or discipline. By putting all those involved around a table (or having them work virtually with a social quality system), the risks can be viewed from different angles and interests. This provides a joint insight into the risks present and to be controlled. Instrument: a risk carousel.

A risk carousel: step by step

The application of a risk carousel can be written in 3 basic steps:

Step 1.  Preparation
With good preparation, participants should gain insight into questions such as:
- What are the set (quality) requirements, (quality) goals
- What are risks if these requirements, goals cannot be met
- What are the opportunities to improve further

Step 2. Facts
During a risk carousel session, possibly already preparation with a set up social quality system, the people involved get to work. Beforehand, they receive a presentation about the situation, the risk method and what else is already known about the set goals, risks, measures, opportunities, etc. From their own point of view, those involved describe their 'own' goals, risks, risk classification in preparation for an exchange of knowledge and experience. Results are recorded. Ultimately, an attempt must be made to arrive at the clearest possible position: goals, risks, classification of risks, application of measures and their expected effectiveness.

Step 3. Final result
The end result of the risk carousel is the start of the later (project) activities. That is why everything must be well documented, well defined (preferably SMART - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound) and communicated to those involved after authorization. Later, the measures must be managed and monitored for effectiveness, for example with a social quality system.
